Fireplace Safety Tips

It’s about that time of year again to set the clocks back and check your smoke detectors. This year daylight savings time falls on Sunday, November 6th. With the weather cooling down, it will be time to prep your fireplaces. Here are just a few safety tips:

1)      Clean the fireplace of any leftover debris from last year
2)      Burn only dry, seasoned hardwood
3)      Place fire screen in front of the fireplace to contain embers. This will protect children and pets from getting too close to the fire.
4)      Keep newspapers and items at least 3 feet away from the fireplace
5)      Make sure you have installed or checked the batteries in your smoke detectors before lighting the fireplace
Be safe and enjoy!

Are you guilty of distracted driving?

Texting while driving has become a nationwide epidemic. According to and reported by News 12, texting while driving causes 1000 accidents and 9 fatalities per day. Teens are among the drivers who are most impaired by distraction. Here are some statistics that will hopefully make you think twice before you pick you your phone:

• Drivers who are texting are 23 times more likely to get into an accident.
• At least 1.6 million crashes (28 percent of all crashes) are caused each year by drivers either texting or talking on cellphones.
• 5,500 people were killed in 2009 because of “distracted driving.”
• 71 percent of people between the ages of 18 and 49 admit they text or talk on the phone while they drive.
• In a recent survey, 90 percent of teenage drivers acknowledged such distracted driving behavior as texting or talking on a cellphone although most respondents were aware that the behavior increased the risk of an accident.
• 52 percent of drivers said they feel less safe on the roads now, than they did five yearsago. The leading reason cited (88 percent) was distracted driving by motorists who drive while texting and emailing.

AT&T has come up with a plan to try and reduce the number of people who text and drive. It is called the It can wait campaign, which is targeted at young drivers. It is a series of short videos on fatalities caused byno texting texting and driving. They are asking that everyone take a pledge to not text and drive. “No text message, email, website or video is worth the risk of endangering my life or the lives of others on the road. I pledge to never text and drive and will take action to educate others about the dangers of texting while driving. NO text is worth the risk. It can wait.” To take the pledge visit www.itcanwait.com

JUST IN TIME FOR SPRING ~ SPIDER-PROOF YOUR HOME

Spider –proof your home

            Just in time for spring!

Be on the lookout for spiders this time of year.  Spiders usually enter homes through exterior vents or cracks around windows and doors.  Because they eat other insects, their presence is a clear indication that other bugs are also in your home. To keep your house spider-free, try these tips:

  • Vacuum any places that you find spiders. Cracks and corners are most common places that spiders will have egg sacs.
  • Keep garbage cans away from your house, spiders linger around them looking for other bugs to catch.
  • Keep your home tidy and neat so that the spiders can’t hide in the clutter.
  • Spiders hate any citrus smell/taste. Spiders’ taste buds are located in their legs, so dusting with lemon Pledge can defer them from coming in your home as well.
  • If you have a pet, keep their food tightly packed in a container so that spiders or other bugs aren’t attracted to it.
  • Make sure there aren’t any trees or bushes touching the walls of your house.

As the seasons begin to change, these helpful hints can keep your family and home safe from spiders and other pests.

DID YOU KNOW, DRYERS ARE A HIDDEN FIRE HAZARD?

Dryers are a hidden fire hazard! Dryer vents clogged with lint are serious fire hazards and increase your energy costs.

Be safe – an estimated 15,500 fires are caused by clothes dryers annually. * These account for an average of 34 deaths, 430 injuries, and more than $209 million in property damages. These are only reported cases.

Poorly maintained and non-code compliant exhaust materials are fire risks. Fire marshals and leading appliance manufacturers recommend dryer vents be cleaned by a professional annually.

Please do a dryer vent inspection to insure your families’ safety.
